Oh crap, enough is enough already! It's amazing how they find ways to try to get your money for rehashed merch of late. I've been putting my foot down regarding a lot of it and just saying "eff it".
I am correlating the ToyBiz main habit of rehashing figures with minor variations (if that) into other sets with new content or style to that of what the movie industry is starting to do with movies.
I know some didn't like it, but I liked the movie Underworld. I galdly picked up the original when it was released, watched it and was happy. Then a few months afterward, they announced a Director's cut ofthe movie wtih an additional 23-minutes of footage /reediting. I thought cool! I'll grab it and try to seel the old one. Now that worked (that time), and I purchased the exended version and loved it.
Now what gets me, is they just announced they are going to be releasing that movie on Suprbit format, and I am a major fan of Superbit, and I considered it for a second (and may have longer than that had they told us which version is going on Superbit!), and then thought about it and got downtrodden over it sounding like action figures from ToyBiz.
They release the movie as it was in theaters, to then see how it does, and repackage it, and do it again. All with minor changes that make it slightly more appealing than the first time around, but another $20-$30 out of pocket for it.
They also announced that Spider-man 2 is going to be released onthe same day in a 2-disc set full of features and extras as well as in a movie-only format of Superbit. I bought the superbit version of Spider-man just a few months ago cause the movie is so much better in that format if you have the equipment for it. So now I have the orignal release of Spider-man with the features, and the Superbit version. I will most likely be buying the same for the second movie. One to have the features, and other to have the superbit. *sigh*
I can't lump all the movies that are releasing DC/EE versions into this as Hellboy, and the LOTR Trilogy were set up as such (and a just announced CoR Director's cut will be released), and there have been one or two movies that were intially released in Superbit format (Panic Room and then the upcoming Spider-man 2)
Why can't the studios just decide to announce them far enough ahead of time to allow us to choose better, and/or get their ass in gear and release all different formats of the same movie content on the same day! They could do Spuerbit releases at the same time if they just gave up worrying about Full Frame versions of the movie - who the hell buys those anyway?? Do your fellow man a favor and if you ever see them purchasing a Full Frame movie when you are in a store - smack them aside the head and inform them of the idiot action they are about to undertake!
viva la Superbit!

Mega... do you know where there is a list of all the movies that are available on Superbit?
The only one I have is Panic Room and I do hear a difference in audio quality, especially with DTS option on.
http://www.sonypictures.com/cthe/superbit lists all the titles currently released. They have just announced Underworld, The Missing, S.W.A.T., Once Upon a Time in Mexico, and The Guns of Navarone for release on 10/26 (all 5)
Spider-man 2 is releasing at the same time as the movie's initial release in Nov.

Look at how many special editions are offered of movies like Evil Dead-- each of them are slightly different, but none of them have ALL of the extended features... that's probably a few years down the line and yet another version for us mindless consumers to buy.
If they were our friends and respected us, they'd say, "Pssst-- we've got a way better version coming out in six months, so just hold out 'til then!"
But they're not and they don't.
You're lucky if they use lube or have the courtesy to give you a reacharound.
just ranting WLN
I know why they do it, and I will follow in line for some, others not.
Well, with a lot of your examples, they let us know well ahead of time. All of the LOTR EE were announced before the movie came out on DVD, as was the Hellboy one, although not as well known. And you obviously know that there will be 2 different versions of Spider-Man 2 available well before it's out.
These different versions allow people to get what they want. Not everybody wants the EE LOTR, so they just buy the regular version. Some people wait and get the EE version.
As for the Spider-Man 2, some people want Super-Bit, but they can't fit all the extras, so they make a different DVD for those who want the extras.
The only ones that piss me off are the ones that release different versions in a short amount of time without announcing that they will.
Toybiz??? err, McFarlane and many others have also been doing it for years...
But yeah, I can agree with you, it's becoming a money indusry like everything else. You cannot fight it.
Best thing to do is to wait 2 years after the movie's theater release, then by the DVD of then.
Oh, and then these big studio's wonder why piracy is growing, simple fans cannot afford everything.
BTW, your latest Underworld, is that the one with the slide off cover that gives the effect of the rising moon?
The company that releases the Superbit movies is Columbia Tri-star, so if they are the production company then more then likely there will be a Super-bit version. As far as the extras go, with super-bit there are none it remasters the picture and the audio and fills the disc. But if it is a super-bit deluxe then there will be a second disc that contains the extras, they did that with Snatch. Now I don't rebuy movies unless they have tweaked the audio, not a big fan of all the extras, at least not enough to buy the same movie twice. But super-bit gets me every time.
That's why I buy one version of a DVD, and thats it.
